The article describes the various stages of the preparatory work on the Dictionary of the 18th century Russian. It provides archive records such as excerpts from the working group session minutes or from official letters. The documents reflect the process of the Dictionary’s creation beginning from the development of its scientific concept and discussions of the scientific and practical problems involved with the 18th century Russian vocabulary description. The work on the Dictionary began in the 1960s with establishing its sources and developing a card index for the Dictionary of 18th century Russian. The Card Index was intended to present the lexical composition diversity of the 18th century Russian. As the 18th century Russian lexis remained virtually uncharted until the mid-20th century, the development of the Card Index proceeded in parallel with a study of the 18th century vocabulary spawning a number of publications including several monographs and collections of papers. Apart from merely recording the lexical structure of the 18th century Russian, the authors also aimed to show the nation-wide dynamic processes unfolding in the course of the Russian literary language formation. One of the primary goals was to elaborate a new lexicographical description approach proposed by Yu. S. Sorokin and L. L. Kutina.
Various work-related pressures and problems of scientific and practical nature were regularly discussed at meetings of various levels. As an appendix to this article, we publish a report by Yu. S. Sorokin delivered at a meeting of the Department of Literature and Language of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1983). The report analyzes the problems to be solved by the compilers to fully present the vocabulary of the Russian language of the period addressed and to meet the technical requirements for the relevant volume of the Dictionary to ensure its timely publication.
