This paper discusses continuative expressions in parallel translations of the Gospel of Luke. According to the definition proposed in the paper, continuative expressions (markers) refer to a situation which has started before the reference time and exists at the reference time (expressions describing situations resumed after a break are excluded from the analysis). In addition, the given state of affairs may (but does not have to) be compared to the speaker’s expectations. The sample database compiled for the study consists of 38 continuative expressions in 33 genealogically diverse languages (the data for 29 languages were automatically extracted from the “Stockholm” Parallel Bible Corpus, the data for 4 more languages — Abaza (Northwest Caucasian), Lezgian (East Caucasian), Gban (Mande), Warlpiri (Pama-Nyungan) — were added manually). Since most continuative expressions are polysemous, the examined translations of the Gospel of Luke include, along with their occurrences in the continuative meaning, also their uses in additive, repetitive and other functions. Based on the analysis of the translations of the Gospel of Luke to Russian and English, all possible non-continuative uses were filtered out, and 17 potentially continuative contexts in the Gospel of Luke were selected. It was hypothesized that a high number of occurrences of a continuative marker in these continuative contexts implies a high degree of its obligatoriness and hence an advanced stage of its grammaticalization. However, my findings show rather mixed results. Many of the selected potentially continuative contexts turned out to represent a typologically rare type of ‘while / when’-constructions, whereas the number of more standard continuative contexts is too insignificant to allow for a thorough analysis. It appears, therefore, that the Gospel of Luke is hardly an ideal source for a study of continuative expressions, and the end results of the present research should be taken with certain caution.
