Reported speech constructions in Bashkir

The paper discusses complement clauses
introduced by the complementizer tip ‘say.CV’, which is the primary
means of expressing reported speech in Bashkir. Two strategies to
encode participants in the reported speech are analyzed — the
so-called “direct” and “indirect speech”. The paper focuses on two
questions, namely, the restrictions on the realization of the
participant imposed by the choice of the strategy and the factors
that influence the choice of the strategy itself. It is suggested
that the choice of the strategy is determined by the set of
communicative roles of the relevant participant. The paper also
discusses arguments in favor of the analysis of the Bashkir “direct
speech” constructions in terms of indexical shifting.
