Interrogativity in Bashkir

This paper describes the grammatical
markers and other relevant elements that are used in different
types of interrogative sentences in Bashkir. The study is based on
the data collected in the villages of Rakhmetovo and Baimovo,
Abzelilovsky district of Bashkortostan. The main grammatical
interrogative marker, the enclitic particle =mE, is used in polar
questions (where it normally attaches to the predicate), and in
alternative questions (where it in most cases attaches to each of
the coordinated constituents). Content questions do not contain the
particle, but use different interrogative words (mostly in situ). A
number of tag-like and particle-like markers can be used to form
biased questions. Separately, the marking of several special types
of questions is described, including non-standard illocutionary
types (“deliberative”, permissive, hortative), echo questions, and
embedded questions. Intonation patterns are described for polar,
alternative, and content questions, and also for echo
questions.
