The paper examines the factors associated
with the occurrence of plural marker on nouns in Bashkir. In
Bashkir, plural marking is optional, i. e. even if a noun has a
plural referent, the plural marker can be absent. The two main
methods used in the study were quantitative analysis of natural
texts and an experiment. The aim of the corpus study was to reveal
the grammatical and discourse factors that determine the presence
or absence of the plural marker. The study showed that plural
marking in Bashkir is associated with the referential status of the
noun phrase, the animacy of its referent and its syntactic
position. The experiment was conducted in order to investigate the
relationship between plural marking of nouns and ontological
features of objects they denote. The results of the experiment give
a more detailed picture of the influence of ontological features on
plural marking, the most important of which is individualization of
parts of a plural object.
