С помощью правил стандартной генеративной фонологии описывается поведение финского чередования согласных и некоторых связанных процессов в чисто фонологических терминах, без привлечения иной морфологической информации, кроме деления строки на морфемы и слова. Тем самым мощность процессной фонологии демонстрируется на процессе, ранее объяснявшемся морфологически или через механизмы фонологии управления или теории оптимальности.
